This is like Snooker Pool 101! I see so many players having a good technique, develop a steady shot, but they just don’t understand how to use the red ball. Common sense people! These one pointers will get you nowhere. The only reason you’re aiming at the red ball is to gain a chance to go after a high score ball. So, always think about your next shot when aiming at the red ball.
The King Of All Pool Balls – Once you go black you can’t go back
OK I know… You actually CAN go back. I don’t want you to confine your shots only towards this sweet high score ball, but spend a substantial amount of time mastering the different types of shots and angels to make this ball. Not only it will give you a high score, but it’s also very close to the initial placement of the red balls, so it’s fairly easy to make an exit to a red ball right after it. Then you can go back to the black again, then the red again, then th… Well you get the idea.
Not Just A Good Looking Ball – Little pinkie made useful
At the beginning of the game, the pink ball is blocked by the red ones, so you can’t really do anything with it. But… After a couple of shots, many times you’ll notice that you have a clear path for making the pink ball, and breaking the other red balls at the same time. The purpose of course is not to get stuck with two or three clustered red balls that you got no way in getting them.
The Center Of The Snooker Universe – Eyes at the center of the table people!
Yes, you guessed it… I’m talking about the blue ball! This one plays a major part of this game. You got like a gazillion ways to use it, but I will review the two most common and useful ones. The first way is when your cue ball is closer to the low score balls. This is rather simple, aim at it and use a bit of spin (a.k.a. English, action) to make a good exit to your next shot. The second a bit more complex way, is when your cue ball is stationed closer to the high score balls. Here you need to use a fairly amount of spin, backwards and sideways. The goal is to get the cue ball across the table and back to the red balls area. This takes skills as you need to put a lot of spin, and make sure that you don’t hit one of the low score balls. Just keep practicing… It will come to you, I promise.
Snooker Low Score Pool Balls – Every bit counts! OR…
OK so we’ve come down to the yellow, brown, and green balls. If you can make any of them, and make a goof exit across the table to the red ball area – Great. If you can’t, you can “snook” the other player. This is fairly easy most of the times, and even if you don’t make a good snooker, you’re still leaving a tough shot for your opponent. This is great if you don’t like the other player:)

Is there a ‘pool / billiards’ type game that ‘levels the playing field’ and where literally anyone could win?
Where I work we have a pool table (8-ball, with red and yellow balls).
We have recently had a 24 person billiards tournament for Comic Relief, however the ‘pool’ players (i.e. – the people who often play pool in there during lunch) very quickly came to the fore.
Although £24 was raised for Comic Relief, one of the reasons I suggested playing billiards and therefore having a billiards tournament was to try and ‘level the playing field’ and create an event that was unpredictable and fun – for that reason I was therefore disappointed that the ‘pool’ players very quickly came to the fore.
Is there a ‘pool / billiards’ type game that can be played on a pool table that can potentially ‘level out the playing field’ whereby everyone has a slightly more equal chance of winning?
I don’t think there are too many games designed not to allow the best player to win most of the time. The best way to level the playing field would be to develop a handicapping system. That’s quite involved for a casual tournament though.
Another suggestion is to play scotch doubles, and try to pair the best players with the worst players. (Scotches doubles is where every other shot by each team – not every other turn at the table – is shot alternately by each player). That way the better players can’t just run out the table every time they are up.
