imagine 2 balls on a billiard table.
Use momentum of conservation principle to answer a, b and c.
a)Just as the balls collide, suppose a hole opens in the table beneath them. In this hypothetical situation, is the total momentum of the 2-ball system the same before and after the collision?
b)in a normal situation, where there is no hole in the table, is the total momentum of the 2-ball system the same before and after collision? Assume table is friction-free
c)answer part b for a system that contains only one of the balls.
here are my guesses for the answers (not sure)
a. no, b. yes, c. not sure
but i don’t know how to explain the reasonings. If you understand can you share your thoughts.
a)the total momentum is conserved in a vacuum, but if on the pool table, you have to take into account for friction. If frictionless, the total momentum is conserved. if the hole opens, then you have to take into account the new momentum of the balls falling along with other forces. the second ball would still move with the path of the impact as well as falling.
b)the total momentum is this case is the same, before and after
