The English pool cue is virtually the same as its more established brother the snooker cue. English pool uses almost the same sized balls as snooker, so it stands to reason the cues are going to be similar. There is a slight difference in that the cue tip size on a pool cue can be slightly smaller at 8 mm compared to 9 on the snooker cue, but for the beginner I would recommend you stick to the bigger tip size of 9 mm as it the smaller tip is more tricky to control, better wait till you get more experienced at the game.
The pool game in England is a derivation of the American game using smaller tables that were developed for pubs in England originally. The tables are usually 7 ft long by 4 ft wide. This was to enable the pubs in the UK to fit them into the bars and lounges. Then something remarkable happened, the game become extremely popular and local tournaments sprung up that developed into national tournaments with its own regulatory body the English Pool Association or EPA. The tournaments are now televised on Sky TV and there is now big sponsorship with prizes of thousands of pounds for tournament winners. Although not as big yet as snooker in the UK, you can even make a good living of the English game if you are good enough.
And the game has spread to Europe as well as some commonwealth countries also, so tournaments are now truly International.
