All pool shots begin and end with your handling of you cue, so it is extremely important to know how to handle it. Most people don’t know the proper technique for holding their cue, these people miss a lot of their shots. What’s worse is that with a few simple changes these people could actually be winning their games instead of paying for their friends drinks when they lose.

1. Be firm but Gentle. Holding the cue too hard means that your wrist can’t rotate to allow the cue to move in a straight line when you shoot. If you have a strangle hold on your cue, learn to relax. Unless you are playing in a professional tournament, relax. You may or may not make this shot, but you are much more likely if your shot is straight!
2. Not too hard! The only time your stroke needs to be hard is when you are breaking when you need the power. Unless you need to travel back down the table after you make your shot, take it easy. If you can apply just enough power to sink this shot you are less likely to scratch. Slow and easy wins the pool game.
3. Know your positions. The position that your arm is in when you hit the cue ball is fairly important for making the shot. It’s not always possible, but in an ideal situation your forearm should be at a right angle to the rest of your arm and be perpendicular to the surface of the table. This is when you have the most leverage, and thus the most control over your shot. You can accomplish this by taking a few windup strokes to check your arm position prior to the actual shot.

These simple changes to your cue handling can make all the difference in the world. Remember, it’s not the size of your cue, but how you use it.

Are Aska sticks any good?

I was thinking of getting a new pool cue. I’m a beginner and don’t necessarily want to spend all that much. This is the one I was thinking of.

the cue has the five coats of urethane to increase scratch resistance ( I hope they are not talking about the scratch in the game )..wow sounds like the cue has something to boast on. maybe it has some coating in shaft like Cuetec and Scorpion, if it does don’t buy it.
