It goes without saying that the three main things you need to play billiards, or “pool,” are a table, balls, and a cue stick. Choosing such supplies from the vast selection that’s out there these days, however, can get a touch complicated. Particularly if you are a beginner, selecting the right table and accessories for your billiards room can be daunting, but by putting some thought into what you want before you buy, you will be more likely to end up with a set-up that makes you want to play more often.
The most important component is, of course, the billiards table. This can be a large investment, and before you even consider buying a table, measure the space you have set aside for your playing area. Then, measure it again. You need room to play all around the table with a standard cue stick (which measures 57″ or 58″, depending on which expert you ask). While you can certainly purchase a table on-line, it is a good idea to go check some out at brick and mortar retailers in your local area first. The last thing you want to do is to try to send a pool table back because it wasn’t what you thought it was when you looked at it online.
This also allows you to physically see what is visually pleasing to you. After you get a good idea of what you want, then you may find that you can save some dollars by purchasing on-line. Either way, if you genuinely appreciate the appearance of your table, you will be more likely to play on it. Next, you will need a set of cue balls, and here, again, you will have a wide selection from which to choose. These days you can get designer balls that may glow-in-the dark or feature cartoon characters; training balls; or balls for specific games such as carom or snooker. American billiards is played with fifteen balls – eight solid colors (including the infamous eight ball), and seven striped colors. They are a little bigger than what is used in British pool, and can weigh almost six ounces.
Almost all sets will come with a cue ball. The last major component are cue sticks and these can range from discount-store models made of pine, to sticks that are custom-made to your specifications. Higher-end models are almost always made of a hardwood like maple, and usually come in two separate pieces, which can be taken apart and put into a carrying case to protect them when not in use or when transporting them. You will want at least two cue sticks to get your billiards space set up, and it makes sense to also invest in a mechanical bridge, which is a cue stick with a piece attached to hold your cue stick in order to make shots that you cannot reach with a stick alone.
To keep your cue sticks in order you should also consider a rack to hold them when you are not using them. Finally, grab a couple of cubes of chalk, used to rub on the end of the stick so that it doesn’t slip off the cue ball when you hit it, and a container of talcum powder to keep your hands dry and you have a complete set-up to start your billiards room.

For me I think it is people who put the chalk cube down without the chalk side being up, so that they leave chalk dust all over the sides of the table that you then clean up with your shirt.
This other one would annoy me more but thankfully not many people do it, but it is people who have seen the hustler a few times too many and rest their cue in the table pockets.

People who tell me I racked the balls wrong because they are not solid, stripe all the way around the rack is probably #1.
People who feel the urge to walk up and chalk their cue while it is your turn at the table. I actually threw a guys chalk across the room once for doing that.
Oh I know. The people who tell you that 20 years ago they were the best shot around… That one always makes me laugh. And at this point when ppl say that, I just laugh and say “yeah, everyone was good 20 years ago”
