Pool Table Installation Cost

Need advise – buying a pool table for home?

I want to buy a pool table but there are several problems that come along with that:
1. Although I don’t want to cheap crap that they sell in Sears for example, I’m still not willing to spend a lot. I think I can get something decent in the 1000-1400 range which is about the maximum I’m willing to spend at this point. Could I get a table for that money that I could use for rather serious practicing?
2. I’m not sure exactly how the installation works but I might be moving in relatively soon (nothing is sure yet). So will I be able to move the table easily or I’ll need specialized help for that and what are the costs that can come out of this?
3. How easy and costly it is going to be to change the carpet of the table? I assume that at some point it will come down to this since the table will be used quite a lot?

Any information and recommendations are more than welcome!
Thank you

1.) Yes, you could find a good table in that price range….used. It would not hurt to call around though, there are some places that sell real slate tables for around $1,000 new (on sale). Obviously these are not the greatest in quality, but good enough and anything with slate is better than the crap at Sears.

2.) You need at least a few people to help you move a table if you’re planning on doing it yourself. Slate is extremely heavy. If you don’t own a huge pickup truck and plan to do it yourself, you’ll have to rent a U-Haul as well, and you’ll almost certainly do something wrong. Obviously, having it delivered and installed professionally is the best way to go, but will cost several hundred dollars (more if buying used and they have to disassemble it, move it, and reassemble). If you decide to do it yourself, make very special care to PROTECT THE SLATE. Slate is almost impossible to replace if broken, and will cost just as much as a new table if you can find someone to sell it to you.

3.) Again, if you’ve never done it before, chances are you will do it wrong. Having new cloth professionally installed will cost anywhere from $150-$300 depending on the people doing it and the quality of cloth you buy. If the cloth is not stretched and secured properly, it will loosen and wrinkle, which is very bad.

I’m not trying to discourage you, I understand that money is a significant concern. If your budget requires that you throw it into the back of a S-10 pickup and spend a week putting it together by yourself, than that’s why you’d should do — I know I would if my only other option was to not have a table.

But if you want it done RIGHT, and you want to avoid problems, it’s going to cost some money. The decision is yours.
