In a building where people are frequently in, is asbestos recorded and silled off from the public ?
I go to college in a pretty old building, and my tutor says there is a lot of asbestos in the building itself. Yesterday, we was playing pool in the common room, and a kid from my class, somehow managed to knock out one of the ceiling tiles with his pool cue. Me and another kid, picked up the tile and placed it back in the ceiling. I was just wondering, is it possible that there couldve been asbestos in the ceiling tile, or would places within the building with asbestos be off limits to the public ? Because i really dont want to be breathing that s*** in to be honest lol ! thanks !
If it is a drop ceiling, it is very unlikely to contain asbestos. The asbestos your tutor is talking about is probably insulation on heating pipes imbedded in the walls as it was the pipe insulation of choice up until the ’40s. If asbestos is contained and not disturbed it poses minimal health risk. It’s damaged dusty asbestos that you don’t want to breathe in. It’s a huge concern during renovations and demolition, but if it is undisturbed it is best to leave it alone.
Also keep in mind that those most impacted by asbestos were the people who installed it and the people who remove it. You will not breathe in anywhere near as much of it, if at all, if it is undisturbed in the walls.
Another great place to shop for pool cue building products is Amazon. They have more than just books!
