Oslo, Copenhagen, or Stockholm?
I would like to go to one of these cities. Are they all expensive? I would also like to have some night life and play pool (billiards). What would you suggest? Also any cheap, decent places to stay? Thanks!
Well, they all use their own currency (Danish crowns, Swedish crowns, and Norwegian crowns), and they’re all expensive cities.
Oslo is, by far, the most expensive of the three. Copenhagen comes in second, and Stockholm a close third. You can find “cheap” places to stay in each city (I put cheap in quotation marks because it is a highly subjective word — what I may think is cheap might be expensive to someone else). What it comes down to is preference …
Personally, I love Oslo, but it is more isolated than the other cities, and smaller — the interestingly unique byproduct of this combination results in a much more intimate interaction with the city. Copenhagen is the largest of the three cities in overall population, and is much more geographically centralized, so everything will be easier to get to (comparatively speaking). The other nice thing about Copenhagen is its location in the ‘Öresundregionen,’ meaning the Swedish cities of Malmö and Lund are less than twenty minutes away by metro. Stockholm, in my opinion though, is the prettiest of the three cities. The city is spread out over picturesque islets and shoreline.
To give you an idea of the differences comparative cost between the three cities consider the following item – a pint of beer.
Oslo = $14
Copenhagen = $10
Stockholm = $8
Also, you can easily find accommodation at hostels in all three cities in the $20-35 range, but keep in mind you get what you pay for, so don’t expect any frills (or privacy for that matter). You can also find good deals sometimes on regular hotels on internet search engines like Expedia and Orbitz (for example). More “economical” regular hotel chains would be Ibis and Scania.
