It just depends how far you will push the room.
Here are the recommended size rooms for each pool table:

57″ (Standard) 13’2″ x 16’10″
9 Foot Pool Table Requirements Cue Length Minimum Room Size 48″ 12’2″ x 16’4″ 52″ 12’10″ x 17’0 ”
57″ (Standard) 13’8″ x 17’10″
So you can get by with a slightly smaller room if you downsize your cue sticks…but that is not always good especially if people have their own cues.
Personally I think the 4′x8′ is the better choice. It is considered the standard amatuer size table. Most amateur tournaments utilize an 8 foot pool table. If you really take this game seriously and dream of a professional billiard career, a 9 foot pool table is the gold standard.
