The perimeter of a pool table is about 7.8m. Four times the length equals nine times the width. What are the dimensions of the table, in metres?
You have to use an equation
and the answer should be (2.7, 1.2)
let legth of the table ‘x’ m
and width be ‘y’ m.
so, 4 times length equals nine times breadth means
4x=9y (term it as equation 1)
now given that the perimeter is 7.8m
so 2(x+y)=7.8
=> 2x + 2y=7.8
now using equation 1:- x=(9/4)y
we have
2(9/4)y + 2y = 7.8
=> 4.5y + 2y = 7.8
=> 6.5 y = 7.8
=> y=1.2
putting this value of y in equation 1 , we have
x=2.7
hence length=2.7m
breadth=1.2m
which is the required solution
