Pool Table Quotes

I have no idea how to solve these… do you? o.O?

It says, and I quote

“Solve each equation for the variable given by the substitution of a common formula. Provide a table and graph each relationship:

A. You are digging a pool with width twice its length. Solve the equation for Area in terms of the length.

B. You are making a garden, and you want the length to be four feet more than the width. Write an equation for the area of the garden in terms of the garden’s width.

Obviously I don’t expect you to provide a graph and a table, because I don’t think you can do that on here. But, how do I do these? Please explain as fully as you can, it seems a lot of answers given on here are very brief and hard to understand.

Yes I do have an idea.

Here they are:

A. A pool with width twice its length, so if you multiply the length by two, you will have its width. If the length is L, so its width, W, must be 2*L or 2L. In math, it can be written as simple as W = 2L. You can also say that the pool’s length is half of its width, or in math it could be written as:
L/2 = W, or
W = L/2
Now, assuming that the pool is rectangular, the formula for area, A, is:
A = W * L
Since it is asked to solve the equation in terms of length, we must also express W in terms of L. We know that W = L/2, so the area, A, is:
A = W * L —substitute W with its value in terms of L
A = (L/2)*L
A = L*L/2
A = L²/2
That’s how you solve the equation of pool’s area in terms of its length.

B. A garden whose length four feet more that its width. If you add 4 ft more to its width you get the length, W+4 = L.

Again, assuming that the garden is rectangular:
A = W * L –> substitute L with its value in terms of width
A = W * (W+4)
A = (W*W) + (W*4)
A = W² + 4W

That’s it.
