What should i look for in a pool table?
I played pool at my friends a coulple times and started to get pretty good. so i am thinking of buying a pool table. first i need some background about them. What is regulation size. I think that would be to small for my basement so would it matter if i get a smaller size? Would it affect me when i go to play at other peoples tables? What is a slate table? and any other information that i should know would be great… thanks
You should get the biggest size table that can fit in to your room, with 5 feet added on each side unless you want to use a short stick for some shots. Typically, the smallest tables are 3.5×7 ft, followed by 4×8 ft and then 4.5×9 ft, which are used in pro tournaments.
Going between table sizes can affect your game. If you go to a bigger table, you’ll face longer shots that you’re not used to. Going to a smaller table might mean you need to be more careful about cue ball control and clusters.
Slate is the material that is under the cloth. I’d recommend 1 inch thick slate or thicker. 3/4″ if you’re really looking to cut costs. There are cheaper materials companies will use to substitute including Slatron or MDF. These are sensitive to temperature and moisture extremes and will warp causing the balls to roll untrue.
