Is it a bad time (economy wise) for a home project?
we have a have finished basement & we want to do part of the unfinished half and make it a media/thetre room & put a pool table in the finished half where the tv is now. Do you think it is a bad time? or is it a good time & how much will it help our home value?
Right now home prices are falling. The prices of homes have been inflated in the past few years through speculation and the interference of the federal government. This means that our homes (and many other things in the economy) are priced for well more than they are actually worth. Home prices are presently falling to their actual market value. As a result, the cost of labor for homebuilding and projects has been distorted as well.
There is no indication that this drop in prices is going to end soon. We may see a temporary leveling off, or even a rise again, but it will be temporary. Now is a bad time to have debt of any kind. Not only will being in (more?) debt leave you in a highly vulnerable position in the present economy, but it is highly likely that the work you will have done will not be worth what you paid for it, and will not improve the value of your home once the overpricing is taken into consideration.
Right now I strongly suggest that you save what money you can, get out of as much debt as you can, and prepare for more difficult times ahead. I do not say this to be pessimistic; I am merely suggesting that one be conservative in rough and uncertain times. I wish you the best of luck in all of your future plans!
