is my mom too nice?
i have a 6 year old brother who breaks everything he can get his hands on. he breaks cabinets writes on the pool table, broke the pool table sticks and never picks his toys up after he’s done. Now, when me or my other sisters tell him calmly the first time to stop doing something, but he’s stubborn and doesn’t listen. So we have to yell at him/scold him so he’ll get the hint. The thing is–he’ll run straight to our mom and tell her that we’re being mean and all she’ll say is “guys, he’s just a baby! Maybe if you didn’t do this he wouldn’t have written on that.” “Maybe if you didn’t leave markers in a place he could reach it, he wouldn’t have colored on the walls.” or the ever polular “pick up his toys for him, he’s only 6!” I mean, are you serious?! It’s crazy. She’s way too nice hen it comes to his bad actions. Is it wrong for her to be too nice like this? Because I’m thinking it is. My brother is going to grow up being a mamas boy. My dad isnt even that nice! Am I just overeacting?
At 6 years old he should know better than to do those things that you have described. I think scolding him is a bit harsh after only one warning. What you should do is tell him off once, tell him off sounding a bit more serious the second time so he knows you mean business, and then if he does it a third time go get his mom to come and deal with him.
The problem you have is that you are only ever getting mum involved once you have punished him so your mom only sees his side of the story about how you were mean to him and not seeing him mess around. If you bring mom in whilst he is misbehaving then she will see your side of the story as well.
Your mom’s statement about “he’s just a baby” is totally ridiculous, it’s not as if your still feeding him and changing his nappy is it! At 6 years old he should know what is right and what is wrong.
However your mom does have a point – if you don’t leave marker pens lying around, he can’t mess about with them.
