The Cell is a not-for-profit Youth group in Mason City, Il. With little support from Community. Suggestions?
Our Mission is to provide a safe, recreational alternative to drug and alcohol use to the youth in our community.
A building was donated to our organization by a wonderful man. We need support to pay utility bills, repair and upkeep costs until we are self-supporting.
We have held concerts, games and dances in our building. We are making a little bit of money but not enough.
A few other organizations in town have donated to us. We need more support.
We have tried to get arcade games and pool tables in our building so the kids will have more to do during the week, but vendors do not like to supply to youth centers. I’m not really sure why.
If anyone has any suggestions on how we can generate some support I would love to hear them. We have some great kids in our community and we want to keep them off the streets and safe.
Thanks in advance
Tried advertising? Maybe someone has a home computer and can print up flyers and leave them on mailboxes around town? How about Craiglist for your community under Wanted or Volunteers? That doesn’t cost anything and you can keep
renewing the ad. Call your local paper and see if you can get them to come out and interview you and explain your plight.
BTW it’s good to have facts and figures on how many people utilize your center before you call the press or anyone else.
Have you tried the Police Athletic League or any other Police Organization, like the PBA? How about the PTA in your town? They’re both usually big on helping keep kids off the street. You can call your Senator’s office and ask them to recommend resources. You may even qualify for a goverment grant.
As to what you can do on your own, get the kids more involved in fund raising. It gives them a sense of ownership
and pride in the place. Have carwashes (this can be big money). Sell candy. Get permission to set up a big tarp on some land on a busy road, get the most enthusiastic kids out there to smile and wave and act excited, and have a coin toss (be sure to check at least 10 feet around that tarp when
it’s over).
Send the most confident, well dressed and well spoken around to businesses, church groups, civic and business organizations, to stump for financial support. Be businesslike in your approach, show charts explaining how this or that brought in X amount of kids. Put the best students on writing blurbs about the center and the kids who come there and why, and ask for space in the local papers to publish them. Or, again, distribute leaflets or ask for space in stores to hang them. Put Coin bottles in local businesses with a pic of lots of happy kids. There are literally hundreds of things that you can do, organize the kids and ask them for ideas. Have them recruit other kids to come down and see what the place is like. Get them involved. Gently. Not all will want to participate, but there’s always a percentage of people who WILL, and gladly. Be careful of divisiveness and jealousy among the “Do’s” and the “Dont’s” – some people just want a free ride, and it has to be accepted as OK.
This is a COMMUNITY center, and to generate interest in the outside community, you first need to generate it among the people who benefit most by it. Get the kids involved in their own best interests, and you’ll succeed. You need most to work on fostering that sense of “ownership” among them, and they’ll work to keep and upgrade “their” place.
Most importantly, send thank you cards – homemade is ok -signed by the kids, put big colorful waterprood signs (check with a recycler or the town public works that runs the dump) outside your place to acknowledge groups and people who have helped you. Believe me, people will DO THINGS for praise and gratitude. Make your center the talk of the town!
Best of luck!
