I am 13 (but not an inexperienced player) and I am looking to buy a cue to boost my game?

I have been playing pool and snooker for the last half year, I have a table (6ft) and I want to buy a new cue. I want one with cool patterns and has WAC technology. My budget is upto £70, but I dont want a rubbish cheap one. some ideas are:
RMOD-18 http://www.rileyleisure.com/store/cues/moderno-range/products/riley-moderno-range-3/default.aspx
RMOD-19 http://www.rileyleisure.com/store/cues/moderno-range/products/riley-moderno-range-4/default.aspx
BSK-7 http://www.rileyleisure.com/store/cues/shockwave/products/shockwave-series-2/default.aspx

could anyone suggest a high quality cue (£70) with funky decal designs and WAC technology.

another question about the RMOD-19, Does the Smart Extender only go on the end or could it be used as a middle piece ? I ask as my room with the table isn’t huge and there is one awkward area to hit shots.

Thanks very much in anticipation of more experienced players advice :)

I am sorry to tell you that there is no such thing as a high quality cue that features “WAC technology”

PLEASE, DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR…Don’t buy a “W.A.C” cue, or any other Riley, BCE, JJB sports, Unicorn branded cue. You would get a better quality cue if you took a broom handle and fitted a tip to it.

Before you buy a cue, you should know what specs (length, weight, tip diameter, butt diameter) you would like/feel comfortable playing with

The most the average cue specs are 57″ Length, 18 Oz Weight, 9.5mm Tip & 30mm Butt Diameter. (Not to say that the average specs will suit everyone.)

I would advise you to try as many cues as you can (at snooker clubs, pubs, etc etc) in order to determine what length, weight, tip size, and butt diameter you feel comfortable with. There is nothing worse than forking out a wad of cash for a cue that feels uncomfortable when you play with it.

Getting back to buying a cue….

With your price range, you may find it difficult to find a fairly decent quality cue and case.

I would recommend some REAL cues made from REAL ash or maple and ACTUALLY spliced with ebony or rosewood unlike the fire wood with painted splices you will find in your links that you’ve provided.

Cues to look at for a first cue (Well Built and reasonably priced)

Craftsman Cues (www.craftsmancues)
Green Baize ltd (www.greenbaize.com)
Master Cue (www.mastercue.th.com)
Mastercraft Cues (www.mastercraft-cues.co.uk)
O’min cues

Cues to avoid (Mass produced in china and are of exceptionally poor quality)

eBay cues listed as silent knight, JX cues, robin scott, dark horse, kevin sharland etc
BCE
Riley
MBS
Buffalo
Unicorn
MBE

f you are serious about playing snooker, but don’t want to spend too much, I would advise a “machine spliced” cue. A machine spliced cue is usually a lower budget cue, The reason for this is because there is a lower production cost (Machine spliced cues are turned in a lathe at later stages of production in comparison to “Hand spliced cues” that are hand made (Planed into shape). The quality of machine spliced cues can vary, not to say that they aren’t well built or good quality.

If you are interested in looking for a lower budget cue or machine spliced cue I would definitely recommend the budget cues in this link http://www.greenbaize.com/budget.htm, give Stuart Green a call (Green baize ltd owner), hes a great guy and will help you find the cue you want.

No cue can make anyone play better….FACT, but a nice cue, IMO, will make you want to play more because you have a nice cue and you want to enjoy it.

I would also advise you to ask/look for a cue that has been linseed oil finished, rather than varnished or laquered as seen on most cheap mass produced cues. Linseed oil treated cues will feel smoother than laquered or varnished cues and will also require less cleaning.

Finally, Price does not determine the quality of the cue. On most occasions the higher priced cues are as such because of –

Exotic wood splices
Hand selected shaft timber
Custom made spec
Wood quality
More labour in building

I have owned quite a few £500+ cues, some of which have been poor quality in relation to the money spent so just remember that paying extra will not allways guarantee you getting a better cue.

Now, about a case…

Any solid box case is a must, I would suggest an aluminium case, they can usually found on ebay between £25 – £40 depending on the cue you have i.e. a one piece cue case will generally cost more than a 3/4 joint cue case or center split cue case.

If you aren’t too serious about playing snooker, you can find a “cue” at your local JJB Sports, or argos but these are mass produced in china and imported, but as I mentioned previously, I would’nt
recommend them as all they are, are over priced tomato canes.

If you have any doubts, or any other questions, I would strongly recommend you to join “the snooker forum” http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board/index.php

It is a source of limitless snooker related knowledge and a generally friendly site as well.

I hope you find a decent cue and case.
